“Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition” – Violence, Religion, Power and Lust: Why did Spain prove such a fruitful backdrop for the most famous European composers of the 19th Century?

27th September 2016 @ 10:30 am - 12:30 pm

Becca Marriott (soprano) and Natalie Burch (piano)
In this lecture, Becca will look at why the Iberian Peninsula is so heavily populated with great operatic characters: from Figaro and Don Giovanni to Carmen and Don Carlos. Focussing primarily on a selection of the Spanish operas of Verdi, Massenet and Bizet she will take us on a tour of Spain: through war, religion and monarchy, to sexual violence and deceit.
