“The diva and the divas – Tosca and the women who have sung her” Becca Marriott (soprano) accompanied by Natalie Burch
13th October 2017 @ 10:30 am - 12:30 pm
In this lecture Becca will examine one of the most iconic and misinterpreted heroines of the opera tradition, exploring what drives her character and how the best-loved (and hated) divas of the past 125 years have created and interpreted her. Referencing Puccini's letters, Sardou's tragic play and the opera's historic context as well as the performances of singers such as Callas and Darclèe (for whom the role was created) and some of our more 'love or hate' contemporary divas. Becca will explore how the diva created by divas changes with every new realisation of her operatic life.
This lecture will focus on performance as much as history, and include sung extracts from Tosca as well as other Puccini operas. Becca will also discuss her experience singing Tosca with OperaUpClose in their 2013 production (4* The Telegraph) as well as performing the role with full orchestra at St. John's Waterloo. She will also provide a sneak preview of the new libretto for this Puccini classic which the King's Head Theatre have commissioned for 2017.
