A journey through some of Brahms' greatest Lieder alongside his friend Schumann's captivating yet controversial depiction of woman's life and love. Based on texts by Adelbert von Chamisso, Schumann's cycle describes the course of a woman's love for a man, through first encounter, courtship, marriage and finally mourning his passing. A vivid experience for listeners, these songs capture a range of emotions that speak hauntingly to us today.

Brahms was wonderfully adept at picking poetry that lent itself to musical setting, resulting in uplifting and profound Lieder which lend themselves to performance in an intimate space. Perhaps more than any other composer, Brahms' music is infused with every nuance of the text, creating mini-worlds that seem to anticipate the arrival of early cinema.

Manuel de Falla's evocative cycle of Spanish songs brings the Iberian peninsula to life in vivid hues of joy, sorrow and passion. The shimmering heat of Spain is captured in dreamy music contrasted with toe-tapping brilliance that inspires the listener to dance...
